electro-, electr-, electri-

(Greek > Latin: electric, electricity; from amber, resembling amber, generated from amber which when rubbed vigorously [as by friction], produced the effect of static electricity)

Electronics in our lives consists of numerous tools

Equipment which we use everyday relies on electronics to function including calculators, car controls, cameras, washing machines, medical scanners, mobile telephones, radar systems, computers; as well as many other applications or devices which are listed in this unit.

electronize (verb), electronizes; electronized; electronizing
To supply with electronic equipment: One of the most important parts of constructing living places for people is to electronize the apartments, condos, or houses with door bells and outlets.
electron-multiplier section
A section of an electron tube in which an electron current is amplified by one or more successive dynode states.

A dynode is an electrode whose primary function is the secondary emission of electrons which are used in multiplier phototubes and some types of television camera tubes.

electron-multiplier tube
An electron tube which includes an electron multiplier.
electronograph, electronographic tube
1. An image tube used in astronomy in which the electron image formed by the tube is recorded directly on a film or on film plates.
2. An instrument consisting of an electron tube in which an accelerated beam of electrons produces images on a fine-grain photographic emulsion.

An image produced with this tool.

electronography
1. The production of an image or images using an electronograph (device using an accelerated beam of electrons).
2. The use of image tubes to form intensified electron images of astronomical objects and record them directly on film or film-plates
electron-optical
Having to do with electron optics.

An electron-optical lens focuses the highly accelerated electrons into a tiny spot.

electron-optical transistor
A transistor capable of responding in nanoseconds to both light and electrical signals.
electron-tube coupler
A couple (component used to transfer energy from one circuit to another circuit) specifically designed to be inserted between an electron tube and an input or an output tool, as between a magnetron and a transmission line.
electronuclear breeder, linear accelerator breeder
A device which uses a linear accelerator to generate neutrons that produce fissile fuel for nuclear reactors.
electron-wave tube, electron wave tube
1. An electron tube which has mutually interacting streams of electrons with different velocities that cause a signal modulation to change progressively along the length of the electron streams.
2. An electron tube in which stream of electrons having different velocities interact and cause a progressive change in signal modulation along their length.
electronystagmograph, ENG
The instrument used in electronystagmography or a method for measuring the electricity generated by eye movements.

Electrodes are placed on the skin around the eye and the individual is subjected to a variety of stimuli so that the quality of eye movements can be determined.

electronystagmography
1. A method of recording nystagmus (involuntary rhythmic movements of the eyes) activity by detecting the electrical activity of the extraocular muscles.
2. A method of assessing and recording eye movements by measuring the electric activity of the extraocular muscles.
3. The registering of eye movements in spontaneous and induced nystagmus, using either a bioelectric or a photoelectric technique.

The bioelectric method records the changes in electrical potential produced by movements of the eye in the plane of two electrodes placed on either side of the eye or, if vertical nystagmus is to be measured, then the two electrodes are positioned above and below the eye.

Its important clinical application is the testing of vestibular function or the sense of balance and spatial orientation.

electro-oculogram
The recording of the electric currents produced by eye movements.
electrooculogram, electro-oculogram, EOG
1. A record of the speed and direction of eye movements between two fixed points, determined by registering differences in electric potential which is used to detect retinal dysfunction.
2. A record of the standing voltage between the front and back of the eye which is correlated with eyeball movement and obtained by electrodes placed on the skin near the eye.
3. A record of the difference in electrical charge between the front and back of the eye that is correlated with eyeball movement; as in REM sleep, and that is obtained by electrodes placed on the skin near the eye.
electrooculograph, electro-oculograph
An apparatus for measuring the speed and direction of eye movements by registerig differences in electric potential.
