cyto-, cyt-, -cyte, cytio-

(Greek: cells, cell, hollow; used primarily in the extended sense of "animal or plant cells" [because cells were originally thought to be hollow])

ependymocytoma (s) (noun), ependymocytomas (pl)
Tumors that originate in or near the brain or spinal cord: The ependymocytoma is a type of brain tumor that is derived from the cells that line the cavities within the ventricles of the brain and the central canal of the spinal cord composed of differentiated ependymal cells.

Most ependymocytomas are slow growing and benign, but malignant varieties can also occur.

erythrocyte
erythrocytometry
erythrocytopenia, erythropenia
1. Deficiency in the number of red blood cells.
2. Decreased numbers of erythrocytes (red blood cells) in the blood, which occurs in some forms of anemia or a deficiency of red blood cells.
exocytosis
gliocytoma
A neuroglia cell tumor.
granulocytopenia, granulopenia, hypogranulocytosis
A condition characterized by an abnormally small number of granulocytes (granular leukocytes) in the blood.
haematocytozoon (s) (noun), haematocytozoa (pl)
A parasite living inside a blood corpuscle; haemacytozoon: One example of a haematocytozoon is the malaria parasite.
hemacytometry, haemacytometry, hemocytometry
The counting of blood cells using a hemacytometer.
hemangiopericytoma
A tumor composed of spindle cells with a rich vascular network, which apparently arises from pericytes.

It may be benign or malignant and usually occurs in the lower extremities or retroperitoneum.

hematocyte
hemocytometer, haemocytometer, hemacytometer
1. An instrument for counting the blood cells in a measured volume of blood.
2. A device used in manual blood counts, consisting of a microscopic slide with a depression whose base is marked in grids, and into which a measured volume of a sample of blood or bacterial culture is placed and covered with a cover glass.

The number of cells and formed blood elements in the squares is counted under a microscope and used as a representative sample for calculating the unit volume; also called, counting cell, counting chamber, and hemocytometer.

hemocytotripsis
1. The fragmentation or disintegration of blood cells by means of mechanical trauma.
2. Disintegration of the blood corpuscles by means of pressure.
histiocytoma
A tumor composed of histiocytes.
histocytosis, histiocytosis
Any of several disorders in which there is a proliferation of histocytes without any known underlying cause; such as, infection, or a disorder of lipid metabolism.

Histocytosis may be solitary or multiple, and may be restricted to bone or may be generalized.
