electro-, electr-, electri-

(Greek > Latin: electric, electricity; from amber, resembling amber, generated from amber which when rubbed vigorously [as by friction], produced the effect of static electricity)

Electronics in our lives consists of numerous tools

Equipment which we use everyday relies on electronics to function including calculators, car controls, cameras, washing machines, medical scanners, mobile telephones, radar systems, computers; as well as many other applications or devices which are listed in this unit.

secondary electron, recoil electron
An electron knocked out of its normal habitat by an incident photon or particle.
single-fiber electromyography, single fiber electromyography, SF-EMG Neurology
1. The study by microelectrode recording of the electrical activity of individual muscle fibers.
2. A test used to evaluate the activity of single fibers of selected muscles; for example, common extensor of fingers, displayed as an action potential on an cathode-ray oscilloscope; SF-EMG may detect early defects in neuromuscular junction diseases; such as, myasthenia gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome, or botulism.
single-fiber needle electrode
A needle electrode with a small recording surface for the recording of individual muscle fiber action potentials.
sinus node electrogram
An intracardiac electrogram obtained by placing electrodes near the sinus node or the cardiac muscle fibers located in the posterior wall of the right atrium of the heart which acts as a pacemaker by generating at regular intervals the electric impulses of the heartbeat.

The purpose is to examine the time for impulse conductions from the node to the atrium, one of the upper chambers on either side of the heart, which receive blood from the body and transmit it to the ventricles.

solar electricity, solar electric power
A method of producing electricity from solar energy by using focused sunlight to heat a working fluid, which in turn drives a turbo-generator.
solar energy, solar power, solar electricity
1. Useful energy that is immediately derived from the sun; for example, a system that collects and uses the heat of the sun to warm a building or to generate electricity.
2. In the larger sense, any energy source that can be ultimately traced to the action of the sun.
solid-state membrane electrode, solid state membrane electrode
An electrode in which the sensing membrane is made of a single crystal or a pressed pellet containing the salt of the ion to be sensed.
spark ball electrode, spark-ball electrode
A metal sphere (ball) mounted at the end of a metal rod with an insulated handle.
static electricity
1. Electricity generated with the friction of certain materials.
2. The separation of electrons by friction, which results in forces on charged bodies.

Combing the hair in dry weather causes it to separate because of this repelling force.

stimulating electrode
An electrode that is used to apply electric current to body tissue.

It must include both a negative terminal and a positive terminal.

For related information, see bipolar stimulating electrode and monopolar stimulating electrode.

subcutaneous electrode
An electrode placed under the skin.
suction electrode
A nerve stimulating electrode consisting of a fine glass tube into which a nerve filament can be drawn for the purpose of isolated electronic stimulation.
surface electrode
1. An electrode placed on the surface of the skin or an exposed bodily organ which is used to stimulate or to record electrical activity in the underlying body tissue.
2. An electrode used for the stimulation or for a pickup of electrical activity, applied to the surface of the part being studied.
telectrocardiograph (s) (noun), telectrocardiographs (pl)
A cardiogram which is transmitted electronically to a recording device at a distance from the patient.
telelectrocardiogram
An electrocardiogram recorded at a distance from the subject being tested; for example, the electrocardiogram obtained through telemetry, or, as with a galvanometer in the laboratory, being connected by a wire with the patient in another room.
