(Greek: to bind, binding, fusing; surgical fixation)

arthrodesis (s) (noun), arthrodeses (pl)
The surgical immobilization of a joint or a joint fusion performed to relieve pain: Basically, arthrodesis is performed to secure an abnormal adhesion and rigidity of the bones of a skeletal connection to provide support in a diseased or injured hinge between bones.
epiphysiodesis
An operative procedure that partially, or totally, destroys an epiphysis (part of a long bone growth) and may incorporate a bone graft to produce fusion of the epiphysis or premature cessation of its growth; generally undertaken to equalize leg length.
fasciodesis
Surgical attachment of a fascia (fibrous tissue that separate differet layers of tissue) to another fascia or a tendon.
parasyndesis, parasynapsis
Te longitudinal pairing of homologous chromosomes during meiosis.

Meiosis is the process of germ cell formation. During meiosis, each chromosome pairs with the other chromosome in the pair and they exchange segments of genetic material.

pleurodesis
A procedure that causes the membranes around the lungs to stick together and prevents the buildup of fluid in the space between the membranes.

This procedure is done in cases of severe recurrent pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs), as from cancer, to prevent the reaccumulation of fluid.

spondylosyndesis
1. Spinal fusion or the surgical creation of ankylosis between contiguous vertebrae or a surgical procedure in which vertebrae are joined.
2. A procedure that involves the fusing together of two or more vertebrae in the spine using either bone grafts or metal rods (Harrington rods).
syndesis
1. The use in grammar of constructions in which clauses are joined by conjunctions.
2. Surgical fusion of a joint.
tenodesis
1. Stabilizing a joint by anchoring the tendons which move that joint.
2. A suture, or the joining, of the end of a tendon to a bone.
