cyto-, cyt-, -cyte, cytio-

(Greek: cells, cell, hollow; used primarily in the extended sense of "animal or plant cells" [because cells were originally thought to be hollow])

cytopathology (s) (noun), cytopathologies (pl)
The study of disease changes within individual cells or cell types: Cytopathology is the branch of pathology that pertains to the irregularities and alterations of cells.

Cytopathology relates to the set of features, or conditions, associated with a diseased cell or cells.

cytopathy (s) (noun), cytopathies (pl)
The branch of pathology that studies the disorders of a cell and the effects of disease on the cellular level: Tom was very interested in the cells of living creatures, and decided to learn more about the abnormalities of cells, or also termed cytopathy.
cytopenia
1. Having a decreased number of cellular elements in the circulating blood; hypocytosis.
2. A deficiency of some cellular element of the blood.
cytophagocytosis
The ingestion of cells by phagocytes (cells that ingest microorganisms and other particulate antigens).
cytophagous, cytophagy
Devouring of other cells by phagocytes; that is, the absorption of cells by other cells.
cytophil
cytophillic
cytophotometer
1. An instrument that uses the variations in light intensity produced by stained cell cytoplasm to identify and locate chemical compounds within cells.
2. A photometer that can be used to locate and identify chemical compounds in a cell by measuring the intensity of the light that passes through stained sections of the cytoplasm.
cytophotometric
1. Of or relating to the study of cells by means of a cytophotometer.
2. Relating to cytophotometry, or measured using a cytophotometer.
cytophotometry
1. The study of chemical compounds inside a cell by means of a cytophotometer.
2. The study of cells and chemical compounds within cells by means of a cytophotometer.
3. A method of measuring the absorption of monochromatic light by stained microscopic structures; for examlple, chromosomes, nuclei, and whole cells, with the aid of a photoelectric cell.

Also used to measure emitted light from such objects by fluorescence in combination with selected fluorochrome dyes.

cytophysics
The physics of cellular activity.
cytophysiology
Physiology of individual cells, as compared with entire tissues or organisms; also, cellular physiology.
cytoplasm
cytoplasmic
cytoscopy, cytodiagnosis
The diagnostic study of cells obtained from patient specimens with the aid of microscopes and other laboratory equipment.
