(Greek: the womb or uterus; hysteria)

"Hysteric disturbances", that most frequently occur in women were ascribed erroneously by ancient Greeks to the influence of the womb and were, for this reason, called hysteria, "disease of the womb".

This hestero- unit is not related to a similarly spelled hysteres- unit of words referring to "shortcoming, deficiency; to be behind, to come late, to lag; later".

hysteroepilepsy
1. A disease resembling hysteria in its nature, and characterized by the occurrence of epileptiform convulsions, which can often be controlled or excited by pressure on the ovaries, and upon other definite points in the body.
2. A disease resembling hysteria in its nature, and characterized by the occurrence of epileptiform convulsions or a disorder of the central nervous system expressed by a loss of consciousness and convulsions.
hysterofrenic, hysterofrenatory
Capable of arresting an attack of hysteria by using pressure on a certain point, or part, of the body.
hysterogenic
1. Producing hysteria; as, the hysterogenic pressure points on the surface of the body, a pressure upon which is said both to produce and arrest an attack of hysteria.
2. Causing hysterical symptoms or reactions.
hysterogenic zone, hysterogenous point
1. a painful spot occurring in hysteria which is not a result of an organic disease.
2. An area of the body; such as, the inguinal (groin) and mammary regions which, when pressed, produce hysterical attacks in susceptible individuals.
hysterogeny
The induction, or setting in motion, of hysteria.
hysterogram
1. An x-ray examination of the uterus, usually using a contrast medium.
2. A recording of the strength of uterine contractions.
hysterography
1. The graphic recording of the strength of uterine contractions in labor.
2. Radiography of the uterus after instillation of a contrast medium.
3. A recording of the frequency and intensity of contractions of the uterus.
hysteroid, hysteroidal
Resembling, or simulating, hysteria or the loss of control over the emotions,
hysterolith
A calculus in the uterus or any kind of concretion in the uterus; such as, a calcified myoma (a tumor formed of muscle tissue).
hysterology
The branch of medical science dealing with the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the uterus.
hysterolysis
A surgical operation severing the attachments or adhesions of the uterus.
hysteromania
An old name for nymphomania.
hysterometer
1. A graduated sound for measuring the depth of the uterine cavity.
2. A device for measuring the uterus.
hysteromyoma
A myoma (benign fibroid tumor) of the uterus.
hysteromyomectomy
The surgical removal of a uterine myoma (benign fibroid or smooth-muscle tumor of the uterus).
