trans-, tran-, tra-

(Latin: across, through, over, beyond; on the far side of)

Don't confuse the tra- in this element with another tra- in "drag" or "draw". Trans- becomes tra- before the consonants -d, -j, -l, -m, -n, and -v.

Id quod nostrum est, sine facto nostro ad alium transferi non potest.
What belongs to us cannot be transferred to another without our consent.
immunotransfusion (s) (noun), immunotransfusions (pl)
An indirect transfusion in which the donor is first immunized by means of injections of an antigen prepared from microorganisms isolated from the recipient; later, the donor's blood is collected, defibrinated, and then administered to the patient.

The latter is then presumably passively immunized by means of an antibody formed in the donor; for example, an antibody that reacts with the microorganisms in the patient.

indirect transfusion (s) (noun), indirect transfusions (pl)
A transfusion of blood from a donor to a suitable storage container and then to the patient.
intransigence (s) (noun), intransigences (pl)
A defiance to moderate one's position; unwillingness to compromise: The intransigence of the elderly Mrs. Jackson was extreme because she stubbornly refused to concede on anything.
intransigent (s) (noun), intransigents (pl)
Anyone who is stubbornly or unreasonably refusing to consider changing a decision or an attitude: Max and Maxine were two married intransigents who could not agree on many issues and argued almost constantly.

Although the cartoon is expressing an adjective, it also provides a better understanding of this noun form.

ion transfer
A method of transporting chemicals across a membrane by using an electric current as a driving force.
ion transport
1. The force that moves an ion across a membrane under a specific transport system energized by a concentration gradient within the ion itself, a gradient from another ion transport.
2. The movement of ions across energy-transducing cell membranes.

Transport can be active, passive or facilitated. Ions may travel by themselves (uniport), or as a group of two or more ions in the same (symport) or opposite (antiport) directions.

3. Movement of salts and other electrolytes in the form of ions from place to place within living systems.

Ion transport may occur by any of several different mechanisms; including, electrochemical diffusion, active-transport requiring energy, or bulk flow as in the flow of blood in the circulatory system of animals, or the transpiration stream in the xylem tissue of plants.

The best-known system for transporting ions actively is the sodium/potassium (Na/K) exchange pump, which occurs in plasma membranes of virtually all cells.

ion-selective field-effect transistor, ISFET
A field-effect transistor whose gate electrode is sensitive to certain ions in an electrolyte, so that the gain of the transistor depends on the concentration of these ions.
mantle transition zone
A layer in the mantle between 400 to 700 kilometers across in which there is an increase in seismic velocity because of the phase changes of the minerals present to more closely-packed, denser forms.
mentotransverse (adjective), more mentotransverse, most mentotransverse
A reference to the unborn child's chin pointing laterally (side ways) in relation to the mother's pelvis: A mentotransverse is a cephalic (head) presentation of the fetus with the jaw bone pointing to either the right or to the left iliac fossa (bones) that are on each side of the mother's womb.
mistranscribe (verb), mistranscribes; mistranscribed; mistranscribing
Recording something in writing incorrectly.
modulation transfer function
A measure of the efficiency of an imaging system in transferring the details of an object to those of the image.
