The use of mental as a descriptive term in this unit is associated with the "chin"; however, it should not be confused with other mental words that refer to the "mind" or the "brain".

A reference to the unborn child's chin pointing laterally (side ways) in relation to the mother's pelvis: A mentotransverse is a cephalic (head) presentation of the fetus with the jaw bone pointing to either the right or to the left iliac fossa (bones) that are on each side of the mother's womb.
The anterior (front) prominence of the mandible (jaw bone) that is produced by the mental protuberance which is the chin: The mentum is the fleshy muscles and connective tissues covering the jaw bone which are separated from the lower lip by a groove.
Surgical cuts that are made under the jaw with an instrument like a dental drill which is used to take off excess bony tissue from the chin: Dr. Green told Cedric that he had to have an operation called a reduction mentoplasty so the abnormal protrusions of material at the bottom of his face could be removed.
