orb-, orbito-

(Latin: rut or track made in the ground by a wheel; circle, ring, round surface, disk)

Also used in its extended anatomical sense as, "the portion of the skull immediately surrounding the eye".

orbital
1. A reference to the orbit or its contents.
2. Denoting an electron confined to its orbit in an atom, as distinguished from a free electron.
orbitale
In cephalometrics, the lowermost craniometric point in the lower margin of the bony orbit (orbital margin) that may be felt under the skin.
orbitalis
Referring to one or both orbits.
orbiter
1. In aerospace, something that orbits, especially a spacecraft that orbits a planet or moon without landing on it.
2. A spacecraft or satellite designed to orbit an astronomical object but not to land on it.

Also called "space-shuttle orbiter": the crew-carrying and the payload-carrying component of the space shuttle.

orbitonasal; naso-orbital
Concerning the orbit and nasal cavity of the skull; such as, the orbitonasal, or ophthalmic, nerve.
orbitonometer, orbitonometry
A divice for measuring the ease of displacement of the eye into the orbital tissue, of value in the study of exophthalmos (an abnormally forward, protuberant position of the eye within the orbit; also, protopsis).
orbitopagus
1. Conjoined twins in which the smaller fetus is attached to the orbit of the larger fetus.
2. Unequal conjoined twins in which the parasitic member, usually very poorly formed, is attached in the orbital region of the host; also identified as, teratoma orbitae.
orbitosphenoid
A reference to the orbit and the sphenoid bone.
orbitostat
A craniometric instrument used for measuring the orbital axis.
orbitotemporal
Of or relating to the orbit and the temporal bone region.
orbitotomy
1. Surgical incision into the orbit.
2. Any operation creating an opening into the orbit.

The approach may be either anterior or lateral.

orbits
1. In astronomy, the path described by a heavenly body in its periodical revolution around another body; such as, the orbit of Jupiter, of the earth, of the moon.
2. An orb or ball. "Roll the lucid orbit of an eye."
3. In anatomy, the cavity or socket of the skull in which the eye and its appendages are situated.
4. In zoology, the skin which surrounds the eye of a bird.
periorbital
1. Situated around the orbit of the eye.
2. Of, relating to, or characterizing the periorbit.
3. Of, relating to, occurring in, or being the tissues surrounding or lining the orbit of the eye; as with periorbital edema.
postorbital
1. Situated behind the orbit or socket of the eye; as the postorbital bone.
2. Situated behind the orbit; such as, the postorbital scales of some fishes and reptiles.
suborbital
1. A reference to a spacecraft: not in orbit; not achieving an altitude and velocity resulting in a ballistic trajectory circling the earth at least once.
2. Having or following a trajectory of less than one orbit; as a rocket or spacecraft.
3. In anatomy, situated below the orbit of the eye.
4. A suborbital part; such as, a bone, nerve, or cartilage.
