myx-, myxo- +

(Greek: slime, mucus; used often in biomedical nomenclature)

adenomyxoma (s) (noun), adenomyxomas (pl)
A tumor containing glandular tissue: An adenomyxoma is comprised not only of glandular tissue, but also of myxomatous or mucoid matter..
adenomyxosarcoma (s) (noun), adenomyxosarcomas (pl)
A tumor containing glandular and myxomatous components: An adenomyxosarcoma is a malignant tumor which is comprised of mucous and sarcomatous matter in addition to glandular elements.
Mycetozoa (proper noun)
An order of rhizopod protozoans that includes the slime molds when they are regarded as animals: The Mycetozoa is the designation for slime molds that show both animal and plant characteristics during their life span. The slime molds are peculiar protists that normally take the form of amoebae, but under certain conditions develop fruiting bodies that release spores, superficially similar to the sporangia of fungi.

They should not be confused with true molds, which are actually fungi. Although cosmopolitan in distribution, they are usually small and rarely noticed. There are several different groups.

myxedema
1. A disease caused by decreased activity of the thyroid gland in adults and characterized by dry skin, swellings around the lips and nose, mental deterioration, and a subnormal basal metabolic rate.
2. A dry, waxy type of swelling (nonpitting edema) with abnormal deposits of mucin (complex protein present in mucus) in the skin (mucinosis, condition in which mucin is present in the skin in excessive amounts, or in abnormal distribution) and other tissues, associated with hypothyroidism.

The facial changes are distinctive, with swollen lips and thickened nose.

myxoblastoma
A benign tumor composed of mucus and gelatinous material embedded in connective tissue; typically, in the heart where it can obstruct blood flow and lead to sudden unconsciousness.
myxochondrofibrosarcoma
1. A sarcoma with myxoid (containing mucus; mucoid), chondroid, and fibrous components.
2. A malignant neoplasm derived from fibrous connective tissue, i.e., a fibrosarcoma, in which there are intimately associated foci of cartilaginous and myxomatous tissue (a benign tumor of connective tissue containing jellylike material).
myxochondroma
A benign tumor with myxoid (resembling mucus) and chondroid (eesembling cartilage) components.
myxocystoma
A multilocular, usually benign, tumor produced by ovarian epithelial cells and having mucin-filled cavities (complex protein present in mucus).
myxocyte
1. One of the stellate (star shaped) or polyhedral (many faceted or sided) cells present in mucous tissue.
2. An angulated or stellate connective tissue cell that is responsible for the production of myxoid connective tissue.
myxoedema
A functional insufficiency of the thyroid gland, resulting in deficiency of the thyroid hormone.

A variety of severe physiological problems accompany the reduction in thyroid function and the clinical features are dry skin, coarse hair, intolerance to cold, cognitive impairment, and slowing of the relaxation phase of deep tendon reflexes.

Clinical features include dry, waxy type of swelling with abnormal deposits of mucin in the skin and other tissues.

The skin becomes puffy around the eyes and on the cheeks and the face is dull and expressionless with thickened nose and lips.

myxoedematous
Relating to myxoedema.
myxofibroma
A benign neoplasm (abnormal growth) of fibrous connective tissue that resembles primitive mesenchymal (embryonic, undeveloped or embryo) tissue.
myxofibromatous
A tumor composed of mucus and fibrous elements.
myxofibrosarcoma
Mucus coming from a rare malignant tumor found most often in the fat surrounding the kidneys or in the central part of the chest.
myxoglioma
Mucus related to a tumor composed of connective tissue neuroglia of the nervous system and affecting the brain or spinal cord.
