(Greek > Latin: [receptacle], vessel, often a blood vessel; "covered by a seed or vessel", a seed vessel; a learned borrowing from Greek meaning "vessel", "container")

angiophakomatosis, angiophacomatosis
Hereditary phakomatosis characterized by hemangiomas of the retina and hemangioblastomas of the cerebellum; there may also be similar lesions of the spinal cord and cysts of the pancreas, kidneys, and other viscera.

Neurologic symptoms, including seizures and mental retardation, may be present.

angioplany, angioplania
The abnormal location, or displacement, of a blood vessel; also angiectopia.
angioplastic
A descriptive term referring to the alteration of a blood vessel, either surgically or by dilating the vessel using a balloon inside the lumen; that is, the space within a blood artery or vein.
angioplasty
1. A medical operation to repair an artery, or a tube carrying blood around the body, that has become blocked or which is too narrow.
2. Surgical repair of a damaged blood vessel; especially, the unblocking of a coronary artery.

An operation to perform such an unblocking. Also, a blood vessel repaired with such an operation.

More information about angioplasty is available starting at this Angioplasty Info and the Stent, Part 1 page.
angiopneumography (s) (noun), angiopneumographies (pl)
Angiography of the pulmonary vessels which is used to detect pulmonary embolism or less frequently to delineate pulmonary arteriovenous malformations, pulmonary varices, or pulmonary vessel anatomy.

An angiogram is a roentgenographic (X-ray) examination of blood vessels after injection of a radiopaque contrast medium which produces an angiogram.

angiopoiesis, angiopoietic
The formation of blood vessels or lymphatic vessels in new tissue.
angiopressure (s) (noun), angiopressures (pl)
An application of strength to a blood vessel to stop bleeding.
angiopsathyrosis
A disorder in which the blood vessels are exceptionally fragile.
angioreticuloendothelioma
A multicentric, malignant neoplastic vascular proliferation characterized by bluish-red cutaneous nodules, usually on the legs, toes, or feet, that slowly increase in size and number and spread to more proximal sites.

The tumors have endothelium-lined channels and vascular spaces mixed with aggregates of spindle-shaped cells; they may remain confined to skin and subcutaneous tissue, but widespread visceral involvement may occur.

Kaposi's sarcoma is endemic in certain parts of Central Africa and Central and Eastern Europe, and a virulent and disseminated form occurs in immunocompromised patients.

angioreticuloma
A benign blood vessel tumor of the cerebellum, spinal cord, or retina, consisting of proliferated blood vessel cells and angioblasts.
angioretinography (s) (noun), angioretinographies (pl)
Angioretinographies are the visualization of the blood vessels of the retina after an injection of a nontoxic radiopaque or fluorescing substance has been applied.
angiorrhaphy
Suture of a vessel or vessels.
angiorrhexis
An obsolete term for rupture of any vessel, especially of a blood vessel.
angiosarcoma
1. A malignant neoplasm arising from vascular endothelial cells; the term may be used generally or may denote a specific histologic subtype, usually hemangiosarcoma but also others; such as, lymphangiosarcoma or hemangiopericytoma.
2. A rare malignant tumor of vascular origin, formed by proliferation of endothelial tissue lining irregular vascular channels; it usually occurs in the skin, soft tissues, breast, or liver.
angiosclerosis
