medull-, medullo-, medulli- +

(Latin: marrow; central part)

juxtamedullary
1. Near the renal medulla (inner part of the substance of the kidney).
2. Situated or occurring near the edge of the medulla of the kidney.
3. Close to or adjoining the medullary border.
lienomedullary
A reference to or pertaining to the spleen and bone marrow.
medulla
1. The innermost part.
2. The inner core of certain organs or body structures; such as, the marrow of bone.

The adrenal medulla is the innermost part of that gland.

The renal medulla is the inner part of the kidney.

The spinal medulla is the part of the spinal cord that is lodged within the vertebral canal.

medulla oblongata
1. The lowermost part of the brain in vertebrates.

It is continuous with the spinal cord and controls involuntary vital functions; such as, those involved with the heart and lungs.

2. The base of the brain, which is formed by the enlarged top of the spinal cord.

This part of the brain directly controls breathing, blood flow, and other essential functions.

medulla spinalis
1. A major part of the central nervous system which conducts sensory and motor nerve impulses to and from the brain.
2. A long tube-like structure extending from the base of the brain through the vertebral canal to the upper lumbar region; the spinal cord.
medullary
1. Referring to a medulla.
2. Pertaining to bone marrow.
3. A reference to the spinal cord.
medullectomy
1. Excision of a medulla; such as, the adrenal medulla.
2. Surgical removal of a medullary substance or part.
medullitis
1. Inflammation of bone caused by infection, usually by a pyogenic organism, although any infectious agent may be involved.

It may remain localized or it may spread through the bone to involve the marrow, cortex, cancellous tissue, and periosteum. 2. Inflammation of the spinal cord, often part of a more specifically defined disease process.

One group of diseases is named according to whether primarily white matter or gray matter is affected.

medullization
1. Replacement of bone tissue by marrow, as in inflammatory bone disease.
2. Enlargement of the medullary spaces in the treatment of various skeletal disorders.
medulloblastoma
1. A type of brain tumor that tends to occur in children, arise in the cerebellum (in the lower part of the brain), and spread along the spine.
2. The most common type of primary brain tumor in childhood.

It is a type of primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET). Medulloblastoma occasionally metastasizes outside the central nervous system, usually to bone.

periosteomedullitis
Inflammation of the periosteum (specialized connective tissue covering all bones of the body) and bone marrow.
radiculomedullary
A reference to, or affecting, the nerve roots and the spinal cord.
