lobar

lobe

lobectomy
1. The surgical removal of a lobe of an organ (as a lung) or gland (as the thyroid); specifically, the excision of a lobe of the lung.
2. Surgical removal of all or part of a lung. Indicated in some cases of lung cancer, lung abscess, and localized pulmonary tuberculosis.
3. Excision of a lobe, as of the thyroid, liver, brain, or lung.

A pneumonectomy (or pneumectomy) is an surgical procedure to remove a lung. Removal of one lobe of the lung is referred to as a lobectomy, and that of a segment of the lung as a segmentectomy. The term pneumonectomy may also be used in a more general sense to encompass removal of all or part of a lung.

The most common reason for a pneumonectomy is to excise tumourous tissue as a result of lung cancer.
