1. Either of two folds of skin that can be moved to cover or open the eye.
2. An eyelid or eyelids.

The lower eyelid.

The lower, less mobile and smaller of the two reinforced folds of skin that protect each eyeball anteriorly. It contains the palpebral part of the orbicularis oculi muscle which produces blinking, and its posterior surface is lined by conjunctiva (transparent membrane covering the eyeball and under surface of the eyelid).

The upper eyelid, more mobile, and larger of the two reinforced folds of skin that protect each eyeball anteriorly (front part).

It extends superiorly as far as the eyebrow. It contains more tarsal glands (one of the plates of connective tissue forming the framework of an eyelid) than does the lower fold. The palpebral part of the lacrimal (tear) gland projects into its lateral part.
