A large family of medium to large, beautifully colored butterflies with reduced, non-functional forelegs and long, hair-like scales; eggs that are ribbed, and caterpillars with spines: "There are about 5,000 to 6,000 species of Nymphalidae; including the admirals, emperors, fritillaries, and tortoiseshell butterflies."
