ala (s), alae (pl)
1. Any winglike projection or structure.
2. The lateral petal of papilionaceous flowers.
3. Membranous expansion on some seeds.
4. Basal lobe of moss leaves.
alar
Wing-like; axillary; applies to ligaments, cartilages, etc.
alary
Wing-like.
alate
1. Having a wing-like expansion, as of petiole (foot-stock of a leaf) or stem.
2. Broad-lipped, as with shells; winged.
aliform
Wing-shaped; applied to muscles, as in insects; an alternate term is "alary".
alinasal
1. Relating to the wings of the nose (alae nasi).
2. Flaring portions of the nostrils of the nose.
alisphenoid
The wing-like portion of the sphenoid forming part of the cranium.

Also: ala temporalis.

alitrunk
The thorax of an insect when fused with the first segment of the abdomen.
