Don’t confuse this halio-, halo-, hal- unit with another hal- unit which means “breathe, breath”.


euhaline
A reference to waters containing between 30 and 40 parts per thousand of dissolved salts; that is, in most cases, normal sea water.

Able to tolerate a wide range of salinity; said of organisms capable of withstanding widely varying concentrations of salt in the environment.

The total life of the sea; that part of the earth’s surface occupied by marine organisms.

Pertaining to saline conditions.
halicole
1. Living in haloid soils having a crystalloid content between 0.5 and 2 parts per thousand.
2. A reference to a plant living in a habitat with a high salt content.

Haloid soil is characterized by high salt content, concentrated solutions and with a crystalloid content of more than 0.5 parts per thousand.

2. Used in reference to a plant living in a habitat with a high salt content.
halide

The ingestion of an abnormally large amount of salts; especially, sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and the salts of calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
haliphagous, haliphage, haliphagy
Ingestion of an excessive quantity of a salt or salts, especially of sodium chloride, calcium, magnesium, potassium salts, or of sodium bicarbonate.
haliplankton
Marine or inland saltwater planktonic organisms.
