ansa (s), ansae (pl)
1. The apparent ends of Saturn's rings, which, ween obliquely, seem to project from the sides of the planet like handles.
2. A handle, as of a pitcher.
3. In anatomy, any structure in the form of a loop or arc.
ansa cervicalis, ansa hypoglossi
A nerve loop in the neck formed by fibers from the first three cervical (neck) nerves.
ansae nervispinalis, ansae nervorum spinalium
Loops of nerve fibers connecting anterior spinal nerves.
ansa lenticularis, lenticular ansa, lenticular loop
The pallidal efferent fibers (fibers conveying impulses to effector tissues; such as, the muscle, smooth, cardiac or striated; or glands) curving around the medial border of the internal capsule ( major route by which the cerebral cortex is connected with the brainstem and the spinal cord).
ansa nervorum spinalium
Connecting loops of nerve fibers between the anterior spinal nerves.
ansa peduncularis
Fibers from the medial and basal surface of the thalamus passing below the lenticular nucleus and radiating to the cortex of the temporal lobe and insula.
ansa sacralis
A nerve cord connecting one or both of the sympathetic nerve trunks with the ganglion impar (an unpaired, not even, anatomical part).
ansate, ansated
Having a handle.
ansiform
1. In the shape of a loop.
2. Formed like a loop or arc.
ansotomy
1. The surgical division of a loop, usually a constricting loop.
2. A surgical section of the ansa lenticuklaris for the treatment of striatal syndromes.
