-aceous, -acea, -aceae, -aceaen, -aceus

(Latin: a suffix; having the quality of, of the nature of, characterized by, belonging to, resembling)

There are hunderds of words that utilize the -aceous suffix which are not shown here; however, the following will present important examples.

A suffix that forms adjectives and is used with technical combinations, especially in biological terms: "pertaining or belonging to, of the nature of, or characterized by; to be full of, to possess abundantly". The suffix -acea usually denotes "orders and classes in zoology" while the suffix -aceae usually denotes "orders and families in botany" and -aceaen is used to denote members of "orders of the animal kingdom".


acanthaceous
Bearing prickles or spines; having spinous processes.
-aceous
A suffix that forms adjectives and is used with technical combinations, especially in biological terms: "pertaining or belonging to, of the nature of, or characterized by; to be full of, to possess abundantly".
alliaceous
1. Of or pertaining to the botanical genus Allium, including garlic, onions, leeks, etc.
2. Having the smell or taste of garlic and onions.
ampullaceous
1. Like a bottle or inflated bladder; bottle-shaped; swelling.
2. One of the peculiar cavities in the tissues of sponges, containing the zooidal cells.
amygdalaceous

apiaceous
arboraceous
1. Abounding in trees.
2. A reference to a tree-like or wooded characteristic.
arenaceous
1. Used to describe rocks or deposits that are composed of sand grains or have a sandy texture.
2. A reference to plants that grow best in sandy soil.
3. Derived from or containing sand; having the properties of sand; growing in sand; sandy.
4. Resembling sand in texture, sandy, or gritty.
argillaceous
1. Of the nature of clay; largely composed of clay.
2. Consisting of sediment or sedimentary rock.
3. Largely composed of, or containing, clay mineral or clay-size particles.
asteroid belt
The region of the solar system between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, where most of the asteroids orbit.
bibacious
1. Fond of drinking.
2. Addicted to drinking; disposed to imbibe.
bulbaceous
Producing or growing from bulbs.
butyraceous
Buttery in consistency; containing, having properties of, or resembling butter.
capaceous
