thermo-, therm-, thermi-, -thermia, -therm, -thermal, -thermic, -thermias, -thermies, -thermous, -thermy +
(Greek: heat, hot; warm)
The term heat is employed in ordinary language in different senses. Some scientists distinguish four principal applications of the term:
- Sensation of heat.
- Temperature, or degree of hotness.
- Quantity of thermal energy.
- Radiant heat, or energy of radiation.
acrohypothermia
Abnormal coldness of the hands and feet.
This is often seen in patients with schizophrenia in whom it is commonly associated with acrocyanosis.
acrohypothermy
Abnormal coldness of the extremities (fingers, hands; toes, feet).
adiathermance
Impermeability to radiant heat energy.
adiathermancy
The condition of being impervious to or unaffected by heat waves.
adiathermanic
Impermeability to heat (not allowing heat to pass through or to diffuse).
adiathermanous, adiathermic
In physics, a reference to the inability to transmit radiant heat; not affected by heat.
aerothermodynamics, aerothermodynamic
1. Pertaining to the thermodynamic effects of air and other gases.
2. The branch of dynamics dealing with the study of the relationship between heat and mechnical energy in air and other gases.
3. The study of the relationship of heat and mechanical energy in gases, especially air.
aerothermotherapy
1. Treatment with currents of hot air.
2. Therapeutic use of warmed air currents conveyed over the surface of the body.
allotherm
An organism having a body temperature determined largely by the ambient or surrounding temperature.
aluminothermy, aluminothermics
A process by means of which high temperatures are produced by the combination of aluminium and oxygen.
anathermal
1. In geology, a postglacial period extending from about 10 000 to 7 500 years ago, during which temperatures generally rose following the last major continental glacier advance.
2. Of or relating to any period during which temperatures are/were rising.
angiodiathermy, angiodiathermia
1. The obliteration of blood vessels with diathermy.
2. The therapeutic generation of local heat in body tissues by high-frequency electromagnetic currents.
apothermotaxis
The absence of a directed response of a motile organism to a thermal (heat) stimulus.
athermal
1. Without heat, no heat; not hot.
2. Not warm; said of springs with water that is below 15 degrees Centigrade.
athermancy
1. Impermeability to heat (no heat passing through).
2. The inability of a substance to transmit infrared radiation or radiant heat.
