1. A substance in photosensitive bacteria that is related to but different from chlorophyll of higher plants.
2. A pigment found in some bacteria that absorbs light for photosynthesis.

Such pigments are structurally similar to the chlorophylls found in plants.

chimochlorous, chimnoclorous
Pertaining to or describing plants with thin herbaceous leaves that persist throughout winter.

In other words, plants that retain green leaves during the winter.

chloralum
An impure aqueous solution of chloride of aluminum, used as an antiseptic and disinfectant.

chlorine
1. A halogen element, a heavy, greenish-yellow, incombustible, water-soluble, poisonous gas that is highly irritating to the respiratory organs, obtained chiefly by electrolysis of sodium chloride brine: used for water purification, in the making of bleaching powder, and in the manufacture both of chemicals that do not contain chlorine, as ethylene glycol, and of those that do.
2. A gaseous poisonous corrosive greenish yellow element of the halogen group that is highly reactive and is a product of the electrolysis of sodium chloride.
Chloris
The Greek goddess of flowers and the chloro element is derived from the name of this goddess.
chlorite
A group of minerals, hydrous silicates of aluminum, ferrous iron, and magnesium, occurring in green plate-like crystals or scales.
chlorobrightism
A greenish pallor (chlorosis) supposedly associated with proteinuria.

This is identified as an obsolete term that reflects the common association of anemia with severe renal disease.

Greenish or having a green color.
chloroform
1. A colorless, volatile, nonflammable, slightly water-soluble, pungent, sweet-tasting liquid, usually derived from acetone, acetaldehyde, or ethyl alcohol by the reaction of chloride of lime.

Used primarily in medicine as a solvent and formerly as an anesthetic.

2. A colorless sweet-smelling toxic liquid that rapidly changes to a vapor and causes unconsciousness if inhaled.

It is now known to have damaging effects on the ozone layer; formerly used as, a solvent, a cleaning agent, and an anesthetic.
