A class of agents that liquefy sputum or reduce its viscosity.

This term is used to describe the characteristics of destroying, or lessening the tenacity of, mucus.

It is most commonly used to describe drugs which have this action and are therefore used in the treatment of bronchitis. The inhalation of steam, for example, also has a mucolytic reaction.
