Amathicolous lizards have a special adaption for living in deserts of sand. They are hidden by their color and are able to dive and bury themselves instantly in the sand when a road runner or rattlesnake advances too close.

When living in such deserts, the amathicolous lizard has the ability to survive temperatures that rise up to above 100°F.
