Expurgate comes from Latin ex- (out) + purgare (to cleanse). The same Latin word gives us purge, purgative, and Purgatory (A Roman Catholic Church doctrine, the place in which souls remain until they have expiated [suffered and purged] for their sins before they are allowed to enter heaven).
Tending to cleanse or purge, especially causing evacuation of the bowels.
