Removed, cut out, deleted, censored, purged; removed passages considered obscene or otherwise objectionable from a book, magazine, newspaper, movie, TV program: "The local censor expurgated several passages from the book."

Expurgate comes from Latin ex- (out) + purgare (to cleanse). The same Latin word gives us purge, purgative, and Purgatory (A Roman Catholic Church doctrine, the place in which souls remain until they have expiated [suffered and purged] for their sins before they are allowed to enter heaven).
